Volunteers
The Winter Sculling Series is entirely run and organised by volunteers. Each year we welcome new and returning volunteers into key roles to ensure sculler safety and a smooth-running regatta.

What roles exist and what experience is required?
Each week, our volunteers act as:
- Safety marshals on the bank
- Safety boat drivers
- Timers
- Starters
- Bow number distributors
- First-aiders
While some roles require accreditations like marine licenses, there are plenty of roles available to new volunteers or anyone wanting to try a new role.

Do I need to be available for the whole series?
The Winter Sculling series spans 11 weeks, with volunteers required each week. However, volunteers are not expected to be available to assist every week - even a single week of volunteering goes a long way!
What's the time commitment?
Our volunteer coordinators will share specific timings for each regatta, but to give you an idea:
- 7:30am - volunteers meet and start putting safety boats on the water
- 7:45am - volunteer safety briefing
- 8:00am - volunteers assume their position along the course
- 8:30am - racing commences
- 10:30am - racing concludes; volunteers return equipment and help get safety boats off the water
- 11:00am - time to head home!
How are volunteers recognised for their contributions?
We gift our volunteers a piece of merch to thank them for their incredible contributions - stay tuned for the merch drop!
Each volunteer also goes in the running to be named Volunteer of the Year, with the winner's name engraved on the commemorative plaque.
